Which do you value more in a notebook, sexy aesthetics or raw performance? If you answered “both,” then Acer’s Ethos line might be right up your alley.

On the performance side, these desktop replacements pack an Intel Core i5 or Core i7 processor, ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5850 or 5650 graphics, up to 16GB of DDR3 memory, up to two 640GB hard drives, 5.1 surround sound, optional Blu-ray player, multi-card reader, and eSATA and HDMI ports.

Hiding all that hardware is a gorgeous chassis with a matte silver back and a black and silver interior theme. But it’s the… [Read More...]

With its large screen and the latest version of Android operating system, Samsung’s newly announced Galaxy S phone is part of a new generation of Android ’superphones’ that are set to launch this year.

But Galaxy S is ahead of its rivals at least when it comes to one aspect of computing power. The Galaxy S has the fastest graphics processing unit of any Android phone, according to back-of-the-envelope calculations by AndroidandMe. The Galaxy S’ processor is at least three times faster than a comparable 1 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon chip, says the website.

Samsung announced the Galaxy S phone at… [Read More...]

The new HP Envy 14 strikes an interesting balance between style and performance. The all-aluminum chassis design most certainly borrowed design elements from the Macbook Pro, but HP has added enough additional features to make it worth looking at.

The base model comes loaded with a Core i3-370M, 1GB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650, 4GB of RAM, and a 320GB HDD. Given that the machine also includes HDMI, mini-Display Port, and Gigabit Ethernet as standard options, it appears to be a halfway decent price/performance proposition.

In search of more horsepower?  You can go all the way up to a… [Read More...]

This isn’t the first we’ve heard of the Eee PC 1001PX, but now that Asus has whipped up an official product page, we now know it’s going to come with a matte-screen, which will be easier on the eyes when you’re outdoors. And the carbon fiber finish? That’s still there.

The rest is pretty basic for any modern-day netbook. You’ll find a 10.1-inch screen, an Intel Atom N450 processor, up to 2GB of memory, 160GB or 250GB hard drive, 0.3MP webcam, 802.11b/g Wi-Fi, two USB 2.0 ports, memory card reader, Windows 7 Starter or Windows XP Home, and a… [Read More...]

Microsoft’s new Kin phone sits between two worlds. It isn’t really a smartphone — there’s no access to apps, games, document editing or viewing — but it’s more than a feature phone. It integrates social networking updates, news feeds and contacts, in a way that aims to be hip and cool.

And Kin just about manages to pull it off, but only if you buy into the idea that there are hordes of consumers hungry to have every bit of Facebook or MySpace broadcast to (and from) their phones in near real-time.

The Kin phones–the squat, compact Kin One… [Read More...]

Product: JooJoo Tablet

Manufacturer: Fusion GarageWired Rating: 3

The JooJoo’s story could have been the hackneyed one of an underdog: Unknown startup comes out of nowhere, creates a product that launches just before the iPad, and because of some clever moves and a little luck manages to topple Cupertino’s iJuggernaut. Think of it like the plot of Mighty Ducks only with tablets instead of peewee hockey.

Except in real life, the Mighty Ducks would have been completely destroyed by the expertly trained, better-equipped kids from the rich neighborhood. The same holds true for the JooJoo tablet, which despite a valiant attempt,

SAN JOSE, California — Samsung is one of several manufacturers betting that consumers want their gadgets to look like the models in fashion magazines: Skinny, glossy and colorful.

“Every few years there’s a new buzzword,” says Scott Birnbaum, vice president of Samsung’s LCD business. “First, everything was neat, then everything was cool, now everything is thin.”

Slim profiles are already a big factor in mobile phones, digital cameras and MP3 players, where small size has a definite practical advantage. This year, Samsung, LG, Lenovo and other manufacturers are bringing the trend to larger appliances, like TVs and computers.

We can remember when G.Skill wasn’t really in the discussion when it came to high end modules, but that hasn’t been the case for some time now. Case in point: the memory maker just released a DDR3 kit rated at 2500MHz, which ranks as the fastest memory around.

"G.Skill is dedicated to continuously developing the best performance memory modules on the market, to satisfy the demands of extreme overclockers and gamers. We are proud of the continual milestones we are still setting in the memory industry, and we believe the collaboration with Asus brings the best technology synergy for furture… [Read More...]

Lenovo this week quietly re-introduced its IdeaPad S30-3 as the S30-3s. So what’s different this time around? Not much, except that Lenovo managed to nip and tuck parts of the chassis, slimming the profile down to 16mm. The S30-3s is also a bit more curvaceous than you might remember.

Underneath the remade exterior sits up to an Intel Atom N470 processor, Intel GMA 3150 integrated graphics, up to 2GB of DDR2-533 memory, choice between 160/250/320GB HDD or 16/32GB SSD, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, three USB ports, a 5-in-1 memory card reader, and a 6-cell battery.

The revamped netbook now comes pre-loaded with… [Read More...]

Product: HD2 Smartphone

Manufacturer: HTC

Wired Rating: 6

The first thing you notice about HTC’s HD2 is its enormous size.

A 4.3-inch capacitive touchscreen graces the face of this finely crafted device, while the chassis matches the display’s sleek design. Despite having such a large screen, the phone still feels lightweight at 5.5 ounces. And that display is shiny: We co-opted it as a substitute for a pocket mirror.

However, the phone runs Windows Mobile 6.5, a decidedly outmoded operating system. WinMo takes about 30 seconds to start up and, once running, has a tendency to freeze faster than Bobby

Before many of us even had a chance to buy an iPad, teardown company iFixit dissected one and analyzed its innards.

Tearing apart the iPad was a 31-step process, and a look inside reveals some interesting insights. The highlights are as follows, courtesy of iFixit CEO Kyle Wiens:

  • The iPad’s battery has five times the capacity of the battery in the iPhone. The iPad actually has two batteries wired in parallel, for a total of 24.8 Watt-hours.
  • On average, the iPad sips just 2.5 Watts. That’s 1/5 the power of a compact fluorescent bulb!
  • The A4 processor is
