With its large screen and the latest version of Android operating system, Samsung’s newly announced Galaxy S phone is part of a new generation of Android ’superphones’ that are set to launch this year.
But Galaxy S is ahead of its rivals at least when it comes to one aspect of computing power. The Galaxy S has the fastest graphics processing unit of any Android phone, according to back-of-the-envelope calculations by AndroidandMe. The Galaxy S’ processor is at least three times faster than a comparable 1 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon chip, says the website.
Samsung announced the Galaxy S phone at… [Read More...]
In the pantheon of nerd achievement, water cooling ranks near the top—somewhere between installing Linux and becoming fluent in Klingon. And there’s a reason the hardest of the hardcore prefer water cooling: It’s incredibly effective at lowering the temperatures of core system components. With higher thermal conductivity and specific heat capacity than air coolers, water cooling can mean double-digit drops in CPU and GPU temperatures.
However, water cooling isn’t exactly a walk in the park. You’ve got two challenges ahead of yourself: Designing the water-cooling system that’s right for your PC, and actually putting it together. Both tasks will… [Read More...]
Why Wipe Data Securely?
Whether you are preparing to reuse a hard disk for another operating system, clear off your junk shelves by passing along outdated drives to a friend or relative, donate an old PC to a charity or school, discard a too-small USB drive or flash memory card, or repurpose an SSD, you don’t want to leave any information on the storage device. With stories abounding of identity theft aided by information lifted from discarded storage devices, you want devices you no longer plan to use to have no usable information when they head out the door. … [Read More...]
Google has released a new web security tool developers can use to check their sites for security vulnerabilities. The tool is called Skipfish and it runs on a Linux or Unix command line in a similar way to well known utilities like Nmap or Nessus. The only difference is that Skipfish runs much faster.
The software is capable of processing 2,000 HTTP requests per second on even a modest system. Tests on local networks have yielded more than 7,000 requests per second. Skipfish owes this amazing speed to its straight-up C implementation.
The tool was designed to identify code… [Read More...]
It seems like everyone is talking about netbooks these days, especially with Google’s recent announcement that they will be coming out with the Chrome operating system targeted specifically at netbooks. Here are five key differences between netbooks and notebooks that you should be aware of before making your next laptop purchase:

Is AMD back, baby?
Some architectural updates and a snazzy sticker campaign under its belt, AMD is taking on Intel once again in its first serious bid to regain relevance since the early aughts. The approach is a little different, though: This time AMD isn’t going to power your PC to any new and dazzling heights, but it may very well save you some serious coin.
Witness the Acer Aspire 5538G. On the surface, it is hardly noteworthy. 4 GB of RAM, 320-GB hard drive and a modest ATI Radeon HD 4330 graphics… [Read More...]
Intel’s first 32-nanometer, six-core processor is ready for prime time. It’s clunky moniker aside, the chip called the Core i7-980X Extreme edition will offer some serious artillery for gamers and heavy multimedia users looking for a faster processor.
The chip is based on Intel’s platform codenamed “Gulftown” and will include features that improve on computing speed and power efficiency.
Intel launched the first of the Core i7 chips in November 2008. The family of Core i7 chips will be almost four to six times faster than the earlier platform, says Intel.
The first of the Core i7 chips were based… [Read More...]
