In a rare example of bipartisanship, the US Congress passed a patent reform bill, and President Obama has just signed it into law. The America Invents Act is the most significant revamp of the patent system in decades. It aims to speed the review process, weed out bad patents, and ensure the right party gets the patent.
The law will allow the patent office to set fees for patent submissions, and retain that money to hire additional reviewers. The added staff should be able to move the backlog of hundreds of thousands of patents the office currently has. The law … [Read More...]
What’s the frequency, Kenneth?
We’ve never been big fans of headphones that use active noise cancellation, chiefly because they mask the sound of aircraft engines, HVAC systems, computers, and other sources of ambient noise by generating noise of their own. A far better strategy, in our opinion, is to sufficiently isolate your ears so those sounds don’t reach your eardrums in the first place.
The best way to do that is to plug your ears with miniature headphones fit inside your ear canal. But some folks just aren’t comfortable sticking bits of foam rubber or silicone in their ears, which … [Read More...]
Is it possible to convert a standard home office into a surround sound home theater with minimal fuss?
I have an average-size spare bedroom that mostly functions as a home office and gaming room, and has been used primarily by me. Given the cramped quarters of San Francisco apartments, I set out to make the room less me-centric and more family-friendly by transforming this home office into a home office theater. The goal was to create a room suitable for three things: normal PC computing, big-screen surround sound movie viewing with no reconfiguration needed, and big-screen gaming. Ancillary goals were … [Read More...]
According to the Forrsights Workforce Employee Survey for Q1 2011 from Forrester Research Inc., March 2011, “overall, 13% of employees who use a laptop at the office report that they chose their own “work” laptop and paid for all of it themselves.” That means their PC needs to work great at home and at work. And according to IDC’s Worldwide Windows Client Operating Environment 2011 – 2015 Forecast: Maturity with Renewed Potential for Disruption report, 9 out of every 10 newly acquired PCs are running Windows. We’ve talked a lot about features in Windows 7 that allow you to do … [Read More...]
Today we are heading to New Orleans—the land of beignets, street parties and Mom 2.0! If there is anything that I’m more excited about then fresh beignets, it’s the chance to meet the many talented women (and men!) who are participating in this year’s summit. This is our first time at Mom 2.0 and with the event sold out, I’m really looking forward to connecting with attendees to better understand their challenges and to think about the ways Microsoft technology can help them make sure they are marketing themselves and their blogging businesses in the best way possible.
We’ll be … [Read More...]
Last night I had the chance to attend Samsung’s UK launch of the 900x, the same groundbreaking, breathtaking, game-changing ultrathin that I covered in both the unboxing video that I shot in my office, and in the video tour of the Miami PC showcase.
The 900x is a seriously impressive PC – it’s loaded with a 128GB SSD, 7 hours of battery life and a new Intel “Sandybridge” i5, and wrapped in an aircraft-grade Duralumin chassis that weighs less than 3lbs. It’s one of the finest PCs I’ve ever had the chance to use, and Samsung did it’s beauty and … [Read More...]

The purpose of this post is to confirm the confidence I have in RAID technology as expressed in the earlier post “RAID“. It is occasioned by my recent plans to write a very different piece.
Background: the Warning Signs
Summers can get pretty hot here in Auckland. The average temperature for this time of year is 24 degrees Celsius (that’s 75 degrees Fahrenheit to North Americans) with 99% humidity so it’s no simple matter to keep a computer cool.
Your computers resources are not infinite and each time a new program is called, a portion of the total resource is … [Read More...]

Built Fortress tough, with a Silverstone price tag
Going on name alone, one would expect the Silverstone Fortress FT02 to be an updated version of our Best of the Best mid-tower case, last year’s Fortress FT01. And while it shares a few of the FT01’s traits (like a unibody aluminum frame, acoustic padding, and some stylistic cues like black metal mesh), the vast majority of its DNA comes from the Raven RV02. In fact, it’s the homo sapiens to the RV02’s chimpanzee.
The rotated motherboard placement and right-panel window mean the Fortress FT02, like the Raven RV02, looks strange at … [Read More...]

The holiday season is in full effect and Christmas is right around the corner. If you haven’t gotten a gift yet, you already know that you are in a bad position. That Barnes & Noble Nook eBook reader sold out last month and the arrival date for one is February 1st! Most vacation packages aren’t nearly as discounted as they were a few months ago and gift cards have gotten a bad reputation as being insincere. Time is running out to top off all that bad news, as this past weekend was the last shopping … [Read More...]
I’ve recently hopped aboard the Windows 7 train, using Microsoft’s latest OS on a new PC build. Right away I found that the day I’ve long feared has arrived: Microsoft has removed all features allowing for a toolbar you can dock to the side of your screen.
I hate the start menu. It takes 3 clicks (on average) to launch any application. To say nothing of the time you spend scrolling or searching your start menu for the thing you want to launch. The desktop is better, but everybody knows the mess you can cause by stashing shortcuts there (though … [Read More...]
