Gordon Freeman is a coward. Or at least, he is when I play him. It’s those damn poison headcrabs. As soon as they start hissing – shrouded in darkness, probably fresh off the assembly line from some Nightmare Factory – I turn into an orange-and-black blur and beeline for the nearest corner to cry in. When Alyx is around, I push her into the poison headcrab’s Terror Lair and hide until she makes the bad things that can kill me in two hits go away. Meanwhile, in real life, I lean away from the screen until my spine feels like
Being someone interested in aviation, I’m pretty excited about this: yesterday, we announced (via Major Nelson) that Microsoft Flight with be coming to PCs for free this spring! Microsoft Flight is a new game from Microsoft Game Studios that will allow people to fly over different regions around the world – complete with stunningly realistic region-specific weather patterns, foliage, terrain and landmarks. You’ll be able to choose specific aircraft to fly and fly these aircraft using highly rendered, accurate cockpits and authentic piloting procedures – or simply use your mouse and keyboard to control the plane in an exterior view. … [Read More...]
Fast, frantic, fun…forgettable?
Before Rage was released there were a lot of unanswered questions floating around. Could Id make another genre-defining shooter? Would the six-plus years of development and the much-touted Id Tech 5 engine yield a sufficiently impressive result? While these are certainly appropriate questions for both reviewers and gamers to be curious about, we found ourselves haunted by another, seemingly trivial, question: What does the title Rage mean? Only after playing completely through could we truly understand.
Rage pulls off an impressive feat: It manages to have a lot of personality despite having minimal character. While you may … [Read More...]
NBA Commissioner David Stern, Executive Director of the National Basketball Player’s Union Billy Hunter, and everyone else entrenched in negotiations with the NBA’s next collective bargaining agreement should take note. After a lockout that lasted 136 days, the NFL approved a new deal and saved football’s season, ensuring fan fallout would be kept to a minimum. As a result, Madden NFL 12 shot to the top of The NPD Group’s list of best selling videogames in the month of December.
The entire top ten list for September 2011 looks like this:
- Madden NFL 12 (Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, PS2, PSP)
Over the course of millions of years of evolution, the human race has come quite a long way. We’ve created mountains of sophisticated literature, skyscraping architecture, and the collected works of King Crimson. Sometimes, though, we can’t help but slip into Old Ways. Which is all to say, “Ooooo, pretty picture!” That’s pretty much how we felt looking at screenshots of id Software’s megatexture masterwork RAGE. Sadly, the game in motion tells an entirely different story – at least, on PC.
Early buyers have reported – and posted video evidence of – texture pop-in issues that render RAGE nearly unplayable. … [Read More...]
If you’ve invested heavily in Steam’s growing portfolio of games, you’ll know that aside from offering a large enough selection of PC games to make GameStop blush in shame, the service also has a slick Graphic User Interface that makes keeping track of your downloaded titles a breeze. With very little effort, you can leverage Steam’s awesome library interface to keep track of and open all of your favorite web browser-bound games in exactly the same way.
From the get-go, the Steam client is designed to allow users to add executable files to their game list, but isn’t too keen … [Read More...]
Simple and simultaneously brilliant gaming that you can’t miss
For us, strategy games tend to be never-ending spirals of regret and woe. Don’t get us wrong—we love the genre. But our approach to tactics usually goes something like this: “OK, now you go here and… oops. Everything we love is on fire.” Put simply, mistakes happen. Frozen Synapse, however, allows us to make informed mistakes. In a nutshell, the game lets you see the outcome of your moves before you make them. It’s an absolutely brilliant tweak, and—if you’re a perfectionist—both a dream come true and your greatest nightmare.
The … [Read More...]
Metro 2033 was many things – atmospheric, frightening, jaw-droppingly gorgeous – but it wasn’t perfect. Enter Metro: Last Light. 4AGames is going all out with the sequel to its underground hit, and it’s dropped a whopping 12-minute gameplay demo to prove it. To be sure, this demo’s a bit heavier on the slow-mo gunsplosions than 2033, but 4AGames assures us that the final game will still pack just as many gritty, grimy sense-engulfing moments of pure immersion as its predecessor. So then – no longer burdened by that burning question – grab some popcorn, sit back, and consider building a … [Read More...]
Don’t Leave The Past Behind
There’s an old saying that goes “You can’t take it with you when you die,” but we disagree. Sure, you might suffer an XP loss or have a nifty +3 bastard sword disappear from your inventory, but all in all, your belongings remain intact in the event of an untimely character death. The saying should be “You can’t take it with you if you don’t save your game data.” We can’t help with your lack of FPS skills, but we can help you transfer your game data to a new PC or hard drive.… [Read More...]

Our desire for Diablo III has been well-documented, but – for the uninitiated – we would do terrible, terrible things to obtain it. Talking during a movie? In a heartbeat. Eating food that someone’s clearly claimed with a Sharpie scrawling of their name? Without a second thought. We might even change lanes without signaling, but frankly, we’re not breaking that glass unless an unlikely Skyrim delay emergency pops up. At any rate, the Diablo III beta’s now just around the corner. Join us in rejoicing.
Blizzard confirmed the news during a recent Activision investor call. In news less worthy of … [Read More...]

For one member of the winning Software Design team, his solution not only stands to change the world, but to also affect his day-to-day life. David Hayden, the team captain from Arizona State University, was born legally blind. He used his first-hand experience struggling to see the teacher and take notes simultaneously as inspiration to create Note-Taker.
Note-Taker is a system that enables low vision students to take notes … [Read More...]

If Nathan Edwards had known that our Art Director would re-color his fancy Glowstone trophy, he wouldn’t have spent so much time mining ore in Nether.
Another year passes, and PC games continue to deliver a healthy dose of shock and awe, sometimes in surprising forms. The advent of DirectX 11 is making games look better than ever. But this year’s Game of the Year delighted us not with spectacular graphics, but the nostalgic look and feel of a 32-bit console. We played through hundreds of titles collectively, and after heated debates, secret meetings, and clever-award-title … [Read More...]

You know that stereotype of the total loser from high school – busted glasses, craggy acne canyon of a face, every spoken word followed by a refreshing mist of saliva – who goes on to become rich and successful beyond your wildest dreams? Well, that’s the gaming industry’s past ten years in a nutshell. No longer is gaming that shameful hobby you mumble in between “hanging out” and “…uh, other stuff.” Now, it’s just something everyone does. With the exception of a few stragglers and the occasional re-emergence of Jack Thompson, gaming has finally arrived.
In that spirit, we … [Read More...]
